Coming out of yesterday’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia press conference, there were plenty of storylines, including Golden Boy Chairman & CEO Oscar De La Hoya sitting only a few feet from Canelo. They had a storied split, and the room was filled with tension as both men refused to look in each other’s direction.

While many believed the issues between Canelo and De La Hoya would be why the fight didn’t happen, Zanfer Promotions CEO Fernando Beltran stepped in and negotiated directly with Canelo and his team. The rumors circulating was that Canelo only wanted to deal with Beltran and that De La Hoya was left out of the process. Although Beltran did say he spoke to De La Hoya before negotiating with Canelo, there was an assumption that De La Hoya was cut out completely.

FightsATW asked De La Hoya about his reaction to the deal being done. He didn’t seem too pleased with the question but knew it would be asked during this press conference. De La Hoya told FightsATW, “Initial reaction? I was part of the whole process,” said the Hall of Famer. “I was looking forward to taking it to the finish line. A lot of times, fights are talked about but aren’t taken to the finish line. When we took this fight to the finish line, I was extremely happy, ecstatic because we are going to get a great fight between both fighters.”

That should clear up the social media chatter about De La Hoya’s presence in the negotiations for this mega fight that takes place on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Golden Boy Promotions & Premier Boxing Champions/TGB Promotions were all on hand to make this press conference big and build the anticipation of it. They all did a great job in doing so, and fight fans will have May 4 circled a few times as it’s the fight you cannot miss.
