Deontay Wilder stops Tyrrell Herndon by seventh round TKO Friday night at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. Wilder got exactly what he wanted tonight and that was a stoppage. Getting this victory could spearhead him to a bigger fight as Wilder (44-4-1) still has big plans. The former heavyweight world champion had lost four of his past five fights, including three by knockout before his tonight’s return to the win column.

Wilder a shell of himself

It was was suppose to be a display to show that he still has something left in the tank. His performance turned out to be a very lackluster boxing match. Deontay Wilder spent seven rounds fighting a guy that was scared to be in the ring with him. Herndon (24-6) threw three meaningful shots the whole fight. By time round five came around, you could see that Herndon was clearly looking for a way out. Herndon did his job tonight, you can bet good money that you wont ever seen him again. Tonight was a blessing for him, he was able to stand in the ring, with what use to be one of the most feared fighters in boxing and didn’t get his lights punched out unlike most of Wilder’s opponents.

Watching this fight you can clearly see that Wilder is not in the same class of the top guys in the heavyweight division anymore. He looked like a shell of his old self. This version of Wilder is nothing more than a gatekeeper. But maybe someone is looking at this fight to use Wilder’s name to add on to their resume to help springboard themselves to bigger fights.

Clearly this is another case of a fighter not knowing when to hang up the gloves and walk away. Wilder is not the first boxer that refuses to walk away in the Twight light of his career. Let just hope that he doesn’t finesse his way into a meaningful fight because it would be a shame to watch him take unnecessary knockout loss.
