Deontay Wilder’s Chance for Redemption

Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) is set to return to the ring on June 27th against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon (25-5, 15 KOs) in what is set to be a tune-up level fight and a chance for Wilder to test his capabilities in the ring after his recent poor performances against worthy opponents.

Wilder has not fought since last June in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Wilder lost this fight to China’s Zhilei Zhang (27-2-1, 21 KOs) who had what was said to the greatest win in his career that night.

Zhang managed to win the fight in just five rounds after he was able to connect a right hook that spun Wilder into a daze. And with Wilder defenseless, the Chinese boxer followed it up with another right hand that left the “Bronze Bomber” hard on the canvas. Though the American managed to get on his feet before the count of 10, his legs were unsteady, the referee had to stop the fight with the clock at 1:51 in round 5.

Wilder will probably go back to retirement if he loses this fight as Herndon is the type of opponent that he should be able to easily beat. With Wilder gaining a reputation for being one of the most devastating punchers in heavyweight boxing, he certainly has not lived up to his standards in his final fights having only won one in his last five fights.

The match is set to take place at the Charles Koch Arena, Wichita, Kansas, which just shows drop off in standards for Wilder who used to get to fight in Las Vegas during the best years of his career.

If Wilder manages to put a string of victories together, he could put himself in a world title shot situation and maybe get lucky to pick whoever will be in ownership of the title at the time. However, Wilder has a lot to improve on and hope he still has the punching power he had during his glory days and build up some courage too.
