Ryan Garcia has questioned whether former unified middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin deserves a spot in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Garcia’s comments follow after Golovkin was selected as part of the 2026 class. GGG retired with a 42-2-1 record, which included 37 KOs, making him one of the most destructive middleweights. However, Garcia felt that Golovkin’s resume lacked a win over an elite name. Golovkin ultimately failed to win against Canelo Alvarez in three attempts, securing a draw in the first fight, followed by two losses.
However, he holds the record for 20 consecutive middleweight title defenses, tied alongside Bernard Hopkins. This included wins over Daniel Jacobs, Kell Brook, David Lemieux, Ryota Murata, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. However, Garcia was not impressed.
“For one, GGG never had any real great victories. Who did he beat? The one thing I can give him is that he was one of the superstars in boxing for a long time,” Garcia said
Golovkin’s consistent dominance cannot be overlooked. His list of defeated opponents includes world-class champions and top contenders who were widely respected at the time. The wins over David Lemieux and the grueling war with Sergiy Derevyanchenko further showcase his willingness to fight dangerous opposition when other top names were unavailable or reluctant.
Ultimately, while Garcia is technically correct that Golovkin failed to register a definitive win against the era’s undisputed top fighter (Canelo), the Hall of Fame selection recognizes his unprecedented dominance at the middleweight limit. Golovkin forced a resurgence in the division, fought every mandatory challenger, and achieved the joint-longest title defense streak in middleweight history.
