Devin Haney (32-0, 16 KOs) is preparing to face Brian Norman Jr (28-0, 22 KOs) in Riyadh on November 22. While boxing aficionados are hoping to see ‘The Dream’ perform with the same fire that he showed early in his career, promoter Eddie Hearn is not convinced. In fact, he believes Haney is no longer motivated enough to pursue legacy.
Talking to Boxing Social, he left no stone unturned in expressing his disappointment in Haney.
“No disrespect to Devin. He’s not chasing legacy in the same way that he was when he started his journey,” said Hearn. “That’s because he’s become poisoned by the sport, and he’s become poisoned by the money. It happens to everybody. It’s not a comment about Devin.”
Haney’s last few fights were anything but interesting, despite facing opponents like Ryan Garcia, Jose Ramirez, Regis Prograis, and Vasiliy Lomachenko. In fact, aside from Garcia’s PED use fiasco, the fights were only slightly eventful. Furthermore, his performance is merely a shadow of what it once was. While his fights still draw crowds, one can only imagine how badly he’d struggle against the division’s technical maestros or pugilistic cannon of the division.
Hearn, meanwhile, is convinced that the debacle of the Garcia fight caused him to lose interest in the sport. “After what happened against Ryan Garcia, he would have lost a lot of love for the game. What happened to him against Ryan Garcia was harsh. The response was harsh. He probably thought to himself, ‘F*ck trying to please people. Give me the money,’” Hearn said.
However, Hearn is still hopeful of Haney’s victory in the upcoming fight. Talking in the same interview, Hearn mentioned that despite the difference in power and skillset, ‘The Dream’ might still have a few tricks up his sleeve.
“So, the Brian Norman fight, he’s got a bit of both. He’s got a chance to become a three-division world champion. It’s a very good fight and a dangerous fight, but I expect Devin to win,” he said.
