Jaron Ennis and Teofimo Lopez are reportedly in discussions for a fight, but should it happen?

Ennis is the Unified Welterweight Champion, having stopped Emmanuel Stanionis in his previous fight to secure the biggest win of his career. His aim is to become the Undisputed Welterweight Champion by facing the other champions in the division, such as Mario Barrios, who holds the WBC belt and Brian Norman Jr., who holds a WBO title. However, things are complicated since Barrios will face Manny Pacquiao in his next fight. Meanwhile, Norman Jr’.s team has historically proved difficult to work with after suggestions they rejected an offer the last time out.

Lopez is a two-weight world champion, who defeated Arnold Barboza Jr. in his previous fight. The win meant he retained his title, having only lost once against George Kambosos Jr. Lopez still has big fights in the 140 pound division, as he could chase the Kambosos rematch. Meanwhile, there is also a bout against the IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Richardson Hitchins. Kambosos and Hitchins face off in their next fight, meaning Lopez is in a prime position to face the winner.

Not Worth It

An Ennis and Lopez fight is counterproductive for various reasons. Ennis risks harming his undisputed title ambitions by giving Lopez a shot, who has done nothing at 147. Lopez should arguably secure a tune-up fight in the division before targeting the big names. His record shows that he is not the biggest puncher. Out of his 22 wins, he has only secured 12 by way of knockout. His last stoppage was all the way back in 2018 against Pedro Campa. Meanwhile, Ennis is one of the most destructive punchers in the division. Boots’ record stands at 34-0, with 30 wins by KO.

Lopez has also been accused of chasing big-money fights. After defeating Josh Taylor to secure the WBO belt, he announced his retirement from the sport, stating he would not return unless he was paid nine-figure paydays. Lopez did not secure that, but still made his comeback. There is also a chance that the fight fails to live up to the hype. Boxing fans have been calling on Ennis to secure all the belts at 147, with a view to moving up to 154. Meanwhile, Teo could arguably target other names such as Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, giving him a better chance of victories, especially following Haney and Garcia’s last performances.
