Errol Spence Jr. is set to return from a three-year layoff this summer. With a high-stakes bout against Tim Tszyu in the works. Tszyu is expected to first shake off the rust with a tune-up fight next month in his native Australia. Where he remains a strong box-office draw, according to sources.

The Spence–Tszyu matchup would mark Errol Spence Jr.’s long-anticipated debut at junior middleweight, following one of the most accomplished welterweight title reigns of the modern era. The bout is likely to land either in the Dallas area or Australia, with Texas a natural fit given Spence’s history of headlining major events at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) last fought in July 2023. When he suffered a one-sided ninth-round TKO loss to Terence Crawford in a welterweight undisputed showdown. At the time, Spence was firmly entrenched in The Ring’s pound-for-pound top five.

A move to 154 pounds appeared imminent afterward. Spence was even lined up for a title shot against Sebastian Fundora. With the two memorably squaring off in the ring after Fundora upset Tszyu via split decision in a brutal, blood-soaked fight in March 2024. The matchup, however, never came to fruition.

Now nearing his 36th birthday. Spence widely viewed as a future Hall of Famer brings a résumé that includes wins over Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, Yordenis Ugas, Lamont Peterson, and Kell Brook, whom Spence defeated in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, England, to capture his first world title.

His career has also been defined by resilience. Spence survived a near-fatal car accident in 2019 and later overcame a left retinal detachment in 2021. That forced the cancellation of a planned fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Tszyu Searching for Stability

Tim Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs), the son of Hall of Fame legend Kostya Tszyu, enters this potential showdown at a crossroads. Tszyu is 2-3 in his past five fights, a turbulent stretch that began with his punishing loss to Fundora in March 2024. Six months later, his difficult year worsened when he was stopped inside three rounds by Bakhram Murtazaliev in another junior middleweight title fight.

He briefly steadied the ship with a fourth-round stoppage of Joey Spencer in April. But that momentum evaporated in July when he again faced Fundora this time failing to answer the bell for the eighth round. Tszyu closed out 2025 with a 10-round unanimous-decision win over lightly regarded Anthony Velazquez in December.

A Risky, Compelling Comeback

If finalized, Spence vs. Tszyu would be one of the summer’s most intriguing fights. A former pound-for-pound king making a long-awaited divisional debut against a battle-tested contender trying to halt a career skid.

For Spence, it’s a chance to reassert himself in a new weight class after years of inactivity and adversity. For Tszyu, it’s a marquee opportunity to reset his trajectory against one of the era’s most respected champions. Either way, the junior middleweight division is about to get very interesting again.
