Chris Eubank Jr. could face disciplinary action after allegedly using a sauna suit to cut weight for his Conor Benn fight.
According to reports, Eubank will appear before the British Boxing Board of Control after claims were made that he may have used a sauna suit during his weight cut due to the boxer’s social media posts. The Board has banned their usage on safety grounds. Eubank was required to make the 160-pound weight limit and abide by a ten-pound rehydration clause. While Eubank was within the rehydration clause, he failed to make weight, as he paid Benn around a £500,000 fine.
The fight had raised safety concerns, with Chris Eubank Sr. saying he would not attend due to safety concerns. Although Eubank Sr. walked his son to the ring, Eubank Jr. had to overcome major adversity to secure the win. But the win may now raise questions, with Eddie Hearn being vocal about Eubank’s weight-cutting methods.
“I think Eubank wanted to make a scene of how difficult it was for him to make his own weight and how terrible it was that he had to go through these conditions and so forth. But it came back to bite him in the jacksie. It’s just a standard board procedure that any fighter deemed to be using a sauna, which is not permitted within its rules, will be brought before the British Boxing Board of Control,” Hearn said
There are suggestions that a rematch could take place. However, it depends on a few factors. Eubank Jr. cannot make 160, while the rehydration clause may also not be suitable in the rematch. Eubank Jr. holds the cards since he secured the win. Meanwhile, Benn risks suffering more harm if he takes on a heavier Eubank. Benn is a 147 fighter who came up from 154 for the Eubank fight. Ben Shalom has suggested that the rematch should be at a different weight.
“I think that would alleviate a lot of people’s concerns about the fight. I think everyone involved just wants the fighters to make as much money as they can but get out of the ring safely. That’s what’s boxing’s about and so anything that can increase the chances of that happening should be focused on. We saw a very good fight, a very competitive fight but there were concerns around the challenge on Chris’ body. So no one wants to see that. We believe and we hope there’ll be discussions around that before we make the rematch,” Shalom stated
