Eubank Sr. Won’t Attend Eubank Vs. Benn – Is He Right?

Chris Eubank Sr. has said he will not attend his son Chris Eubank Jr.’s fight with Conor Benn as we look at the rationale behind this decision.

Eubank Jr. faces the biggest fight of his career when he takes on Benn on April 26. Sr. has been very vocal about this fight, having spoken out against it on numerous occasions. He was against the initial 2022 fight, which was called off after Benn failed VADA tests for Clomiphene.

Eubank Jr. was making a career-low weight of 157 pounds for that fight. Sr. raised safety concerns then, as he has brought those issues up once again. Eubank will make 160 pounds, with a 10-pound rehydration clause. Sr. has said he will not attend this fight, even claiming that it will not go ahead as it is against the rules.

Eubank Sr.’s Stance

He has urged the boxing media to speak out against this, as there have been varying opinions on this stance. There is an argument that Sr. has a good point. He recently lost his son, Sebastian, as it is understandable that he would not want to see something happen to his other son. Sr. was also involved in a tough boxing fight against Michael Watson, someone who then suffered brain damage.

Previous fights have also shown that boxers are never the same when they move up a lot of weight classes. Kell Brook moved up from 147 pounds to fight GGG, who was considered one of the deadliest middleweights. GGG ended up breaking Brook’s eye socket. While Brook would move back down to 147, he suffered another injury in his next fight against Errol Spence Jr. Brook was no longer the same fighter who was the former IBF Welterweight Champion.

Sr. has also stated that he will not attend this fight, as it would be seen as him endorsing it. And if something untoward were to happen, it is clear that Sr. would not be able to deal with the repercussions. However, others have argued that Eubank Sr. should attend to support his son. Their relationship is not the best, with Eubank Jr. saying he does not speak to his father.

Eubank Jr. has also stated that he would want his father to be there in his corner. Nigel Benn is in Conor’s corner for this fight, as the Benn camp appears to be in a good place. Boxing fans have understandably had varying opinions on this.
