Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

On April 20, 2013, Canelo Álvarez had revenge in his mind as he fought Austin Trout. The Mexican was looking to avenge his brother’s (Rigoberto Álvarez) defeat to the American in 2011. It was a light middleweight bout at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas. It was a night that Alvarez would be victorious, winning by unanimous decision – with the judges scorecards reading 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109.

Canelo Alvarez Defeats Austin Trout in Texas

Canelo Alvarez vs. Austin Trout Recap

San Antonio was where Canelo passed one of his biggest tests, as he collected the WBA light middleweight strap and won the vacant Ring belt while retaining his WBC title, as he handily outpointed the then-unbeaten Trout. The first few rounds were difficult to score, with both fighters showcasing their impressive hand speed. Alvarez made the American fighter miss with his slick defensive skills, with Canelo throwing only two punch combinations in response.

The power was clearly with the Mexican fighter, as his jab jolted Trout’s head back throughout the fight. Trout was the more active fighter, but Canelo’s work was cleaner. The American got caught in round seven with a lightning-quick one-two combination, knocking him down.

Despite the knockdown, Trout recovered well and continued a high output without hurting his Mexican opponent. The WBC’s decision to have an open scoring system seemingly helped Canelo coast through the remainder of the fight, knowing he was in front. After the fight, Canelo announced: “This is for my brother.” The Alvarez family got the revenge they wanted.

Canelo Legacy

With a record of 60-2-2, with 39 KOs, the legacy of the Mexican is secure. He will undoubtedly be remembered – as one of the greatest boxers of his generation. After the defeat to Floyd Mayweather, he went on an incredible run of victories until a draw with Gennady Golovkin in 2017.

His exceptional hand speed has been one of his most potent weapons, as has his ability to throw a high volume of punches with equal power. His versatility has seen him come through difficult moments in fights, such as his match-up against Erislandy Lara. In his most recent fight, Canelo defeated Jermell Charlo in a straight forward undisputed defence.
