Fans Slam Bob Arum’s Outburst Following Taylor-Catterall – ‘Uncle Bob, Time For You To Retire’

Boxing fans have reacted to Bob Arum’s threat to boycott the UK for his American fighters.

The Top Rank promoter made the comments following Jack Catterall’s win over Josh Taylor. Arum represents Taylor, who was looking to secure a second win over Catterall following the controversy in the first fight. Taylor won a split decision in 2022 to retain his Undisputed Junior Welterweight Title. Most of the boxing community was outraged by the result, saying Catterall had been robbed.

Catterall gained his revenge, outboxing Taylor to win a unanimous decision. While there was a feeling Catterall had won the fight, Arum disputed it on two counts. He argued it was much closer, feeling Taylor had done enough to win. He then expressed his outrage at the scorecards for being much wider than they should have been. Catterall was declared the winner by a wide margin: 117-111, 116-113, 117-111. Arum grabbed the microphone during the post-fight interview, lashing out at the judges.

Arum Unhappy

“Those scorecards were a disgrace, an absolute disgrace. I really feel sorry for Josh. I thought he won the fight. Those scorecards were ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. I will never, ever allow an American fighter to come here with the British Board scoring the fight. Those scores were ridiculous,” Arum said

Catterall went through a similar thing in the first fight, leaving him with no choice but to take the loss. Catterall’s defeat was much tougher since he missed out on becoming undisputed at 140. Taylor would vacate all his belts, except for the WBO, preventing Catterall from becoming undisputed in the rematch.

Taylor also lost his WBO belt against Teofimo Lopez, meaning the fight was for no titles. Since Catterall is chasing a world title, the fight was more about proving he was the better man. While Eddie Hearn did acknowledge that Catterall had won, he agreed with Arum’s comments that the scorecards were too wide.

Hearn Responds

That has set up the narrative for a potential third fight. Taylor expressed his desire to run things back in his post-fight comments. Hearn was also open to the idea, given how much demand there is to see it. But Catterall’s focus is on getting a world title. He said the Taylor chapter was closed as he turned his attention to Teofimo Lopez. Lopez holds the WBO belt at 140. Catterall has defended the Intercontinental version of that, as he aims for the full title. That fight makes sense since Lopez and Catterall have a win over Taylor.

“I was mandatory for the WBO title for what felt like a lifetime. He beat Taylor before I did. We’ve both got the win over him and I want to prove that I’m better than him. I believe that I’ve got the style to beat Lopez and that’s the fight I want,” Catteral revealed

Arum’s comments have received a lot of backlash from fans, who feel the promoter’s comments are out of touch with the wider public sentiment.
