Sharing one of the more infamous rivalries in the sport of boxing during his pomp, Manny Pacquiao was met with a verbal and hurling onslaught from fans after a controversial result.

Gearing up for a return to boxing at the turn of the year, former world champion Manny Pacquiao has been most notably tied to a shock professional rematch with Floyd Mayweather.

However, the Filipino pugilist has also been linked to a showdown for welterweight spoils again, following his return to boxing after a four-year retirement this summer.

But during his first run as world welterweight champion, Pacquiao turned in one of his most infamous victories in a bout marred by controversy.

Manny Pacquiao’s trilogy win over Juan Manuel Marquez

Sharing the ring a whopping four separate times with Mexican veteran Juan Manuel Marquez during his gold-laden professional career, Pacquiao boasts an impressive 2-1-1 record against the star.

However, on this day in 2011, Pacquiao and Marquez were separated by judges’ scorecards once more, this time in controversial circumstances.

Outlasting Marquez in a contentious majority decision (114-114, 115-113, 116-112) win, Pacquiao was greeted with boos and jeers from fans in attendance, with Marquez viewed as a possible victor in this bout as well.

Post-fight, angered fans in attendance hurled food, beer, and ice toward the ring and into media row — with opinion split on the rightful winner of the bout.

Furthermore, given Pacquiao’s southpaw stance compared to Marquez’s orthodox style, many pointed to at least six occasions in which Marquez stood on the champion’s foot, leading to a lengthy episode of foot stomp-gate.

Manny Pacquiao’s shock loss to Juan Manuel Marquez

Despite taking bragging rights with a second win from three matchups, fans still called for a definitive fourth bout between Pacquiao and Marquez to hopefully settle the score for good.

And staggeringly, just over a year later, Pacquiao would share the ring with the Mexican again, having lost his title in an upset defeat to Timothy Bradley.

Put to the sword in devastating fashion, Pacquiao was folded with a hellacious shot from Marquez in the sixth round, with just a single second remaining in the frame.
