Fight Night Fallout: The Dillian Whyte Injury Shakes Boxing Bout

It is a disappointment for boxing fans after Dillian Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs) had to pull out of his April 5th fight against Joe Joyce (16-3, 15 KOs). The two heavyweights were set to face each other in Manchester to headline a Queensberry Promotions Show, on DAZN.

Joe Joyce is aiming to get back to winning ways after a shocking loss to Derek Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) in July last year where he was knocked down and outpunched making his loss a unanimous decision on all three scorecards after the 10 rounds of action.

With Dillian Whyte out of the fight, Joe Joyce is supposed to get another opponent for him not to be dropped from the card. Joyce has lost three of his previous four fights after winning the WBO interim heavyweight title against Joseph Parker which was two and a half years ago.

Whyte who has enjoyed a distinguished career of facing opponents like Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) and Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) in the past, was denied a rematch with Anthony Joshua in 2023 after a failed Voluntary Anti-Doping Association test. After an investigation was concluded, he was cleared and allowed back after the results showed that the positive result was caused by a contaminated supplement.

Whyte was last featured in the ring in mid-December where he took on Ebenezer Tetteh (23-2, 20 KOs) in Gibraltar and claimed the victory at the end of the seventh round.

Dillian went on exclusively to explain how his freak accident occurred.

“I was in the gym working out, and as everyone is supposed put their weights away, someone did not, and their weight rolled under the bench. I was doing my weights at the time, and when I went to put my weights down, I crushed my finger between the dumbbell and the ones the other person left out. It literally just crushed it,” said Dillian.

While trying to explain further how serious the cut was, he had this to say.

‘I have had seven stitches just to help hold it in place because it is really deep. It is all the way down to the bone and to the nerve. They had to glue it closed and then add the stitches to sort of hold it in place. Also, the place it is in is difficult because it is really easy for it to reopen,’ said Dillian.

On consulting with his medical team of professionals, the team has told him that he will not be able to punch for at least three to four weeks, with the fight against Joyce just five weeks away, Dillian was eager to push ahead. He is quite confident that he can still beat Joyce even without a full training camp.

In their press conference to announce the fight, Dillian Whyte called Joe Joyce “boring”. This was in response to Joe Joyce telling the media that he was going knock Dillian Whyte out.

“Joe Joyce said he is going to knock me out on the 5th of April, we will see. Joe Joyce is going to put me to sleep but not by knocking me out because he is f**king boring. He is the only man I know who can put coffee to sleep. Boring as f**k. Great fighter but boring guy,” said Dillian.
