Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson’s planned exhibition may be dead in the water as the legendary champion appears to have moved on to a new bout.
The boxing icons were due to meet this year in what would have been one of the most intriguing – if bizarre and dangerous – match-ups in recent memory. However, word from both men has gone quiet since December, and now there appears to be a new fight on the table.
After retiring in 2017, Mayweather spent the following seven years taking on exhibition bouts with MMA fighters, celebrities and even an old sparring partner during a world tour of sorts. Meanwhile, Tyson returned to professional boxing at the age of 57 to face Jake Paul in a record-breaking 2024 fight.
When news broke last year that Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson were set for an exhibition fight, most fans had their doubts. Tyson is turning 60 this summer, and there was nearly a five-stone difference between their last recorded weights.
Now, it looks like that bout is even further off. Mike Zambidis, an 18-time kickboxing champion, has posted what he says is a fight poster promoting a showdown with Mayweather this summer. The poster lists the date as June 27 and the venue as the OAKA Arena in Athens, Greece.
The event is being billed as ‘Battle of the Legends’, with Zambidis posting on Instagram: “History is about to be made.” The poster also shows Mayweather Promotions teaming up again with Front Row Fight Series, who previously organised his fights against John Gotti III and Aaron Chalmers.
So far though, there’s been no word from Mayweather himself or from anyone at either promotion company.
Tyson told an audience at a Dublin speaking event in December that his fight with Mayweather would be held in Africa. He also mentioned that it was scheduled for March, which is just around the corner.
“It’s going to be in March and it’s going to be in Africa,” he said to a lively crowd. “It’s going to be incredible, it’s going to break all the records and it’s going to be one of the biggest events in the history of the sport.”
The event was initially announced by CSI Sports back in September, including a mention of 2026 as a potential date and plans for a global broadcast. While Mayweather could technically squeeze two events into such a short span, it doesn’t seem likely.
However, he has been active enough for it not to be ruled out entirely. Back in 2022, he fought twice within just 50 days, first stopping MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura in Japan before beating YouTuber Deji seven weeks later.
