Frank Warren Reflects on Fury-Usyk and Talks Rematch
Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

At the press conference for Derek Chisora vs. Joe Joyce, Frank Warren spoke to Boxing News’ Rob Tebbutt about the already much talked about Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch while reflecting on last Saturday in Riyadh, where we saw history created in the heavyweight division as Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) defeated Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) to become the first undisputed champion in the division since Lennox Lewis.

When asked about the undisputed event, Warren reflected and said: “It was a very close fight.” He continued: “There weren’t a lot in it. It could have gone either way. Could have been a draw.” Warren added: “It was the biggest heavyweight fight of the 21st century.”

The Queensberry promoter then went on to announce: “There will be a rematch.” He added: “Tyson‘s called for the rematch.”

Elaborating on the rematch – Warren said: “That will happen, I hope, sometime in October in the Riyadh season.”

Warren stated: “I think the rematch will be bigger than the last one.”

Rob Tebbutt then asked Warren if he feels Fury will 100% take the rematch:  “He announced it in the ring – and he told me he wants it. Its contracted before the event took place. There’s a contract in place for it,” said Warren.

What’s Next?

The contract for the rematch is in place, but time will tell if we see these two heavyweight titans collide again. The first fight had everything we could have wanted. We had back-and-forth action, an intriguing tactical battle and a knockdown.

At Big Fight Weekend, we felt the decision was correct, and Usyk won the vital moments in the fight, including the memorable ninth round. Make no mistake – it was a great performance from Fury, who pushed Usyk to the limit. The Ukrainian is brilliant at keeping his work rate high, and he made “The Gypsy King” work hard for every success he had. It was a memorable bout and one we at BFW would watch again, without hesitation.
