Fury: ‘He’s a shadow of his former glory’

Tyson Fury has some strong opinions on Deontay Wilder and the possibility of retirement.

The two fighters have shared three memorable fights against each other, two wins and a draw in one of the most thrilling trilogies in boxing history.

Fury admitted that he may have sustained some brain damage in the three fights, considering how brutal all three were.

On the opposite side of the boxing ring, Wilder did make an accusation against Fury, suggesting that Fury put egg-shaped objects in his gloves, those claims were not proven.

Wilder is no longer the same fighter. Under his current trainer, Malik Scott, Wilder has only secured one victory out of his last four bouts.

Wilder is on a two-fight losing streak. He’s come up short against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

A fight was scheduled for April this year for Wilder against Curtis Harper, but the fight is no longer moving forward, raising questions about his next steps.

Fury recently announced his retirement from boxing. Fury was hoping that Wilder would join the club.

“Being truthful, I’d like to see poor old Deontay retire from boxing. Obviously, he lost the three fights to me. We took a lot of years off of each other’s lives. That war that ended in the 11th round by knockout, that takes a lot out your tank and you don’t recover from fights like that. Between me and Wilder in our trilogy there were ten knockdowns,” Fury said.

Fury continued, “It takes a lot out of a fighter. Even when he’s come back and had a couple of fights since against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, he’s only a shadow of his former glory. The only thing left of Deontay is his name. And that’s it. So, I’d like to see him retire for sure before he does damage to himself.”
