The date for the anticipated rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach has been moved.
Davis and Roach were initially set to fight in a rematch on June 21, but their fight date has been pushed back. According to The Ring, the rematch will likely take place in the late summer or early fall. No date has been set yet. The June 21 rematch had been scheduled to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
A rematch between Davis and Roach is something fight fans are looking for. The two fought to a majority draw on March 1 in Brooklyn, N.Y., which was a stunning result. Davis had entered the fight as a massive favorite thanks to his 30-0 record and history of knocking out most of his opponents (28 of 30). But his fight with Roach was a close one, and it involved some controversy.
Davis went down to a knee during the ninth round of the fight. When a fighter takes a knee, that is typically considered a knockdown, which would usually lead to a judge deducting a point. However, no knockdown was declared, so Davis did not lose any points.
One judge scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Davis. The other two judges had it 114-114.
Had the 9th round been scored 10-8 in favor of Roach, then one judge would have had it 114-114 and the other two would have given it to Roach 115-113, resulting in a majority decision in favor of Roach.
The draw decision meant that Davis retained his WBA lightweight title. The two are expected to fight at the 135-pound weight limit in their rematch.
