Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs was expected to defend his WBA lightweight title on December 14 at the Toyota Center in Houston against Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1, 10 KOs). Dan Rafael has now reported via his Fight Freaks Unite Substack that sources with knowledge of the Davis-Roach fight have told him that the fight will not happen this year.
The WBA had approved the fight between Roach and Davis. Both announced the contest on their social media, as did PBC. Fight Freaks Unite contacted Davis to clarify the situation, with “Tank” saying: “January I’m hearing” for a likely period when the fight would occur.
The exact reason for the delay to this fight is unclear but Dan Rafael reports via sources that there was an issue related to the venue. Where and when Davis-Rocach takes place is not certain, sources have revealed to FFU that it is unlikely to be on the same bill as David Benavidez vs. David Morrell.
It appears that December is not completely off the table with a non-PPV card at the Caribe Royale resort in Orlando, Florida or The Armory in Minneapolis as possible options for “Tank” vs. Rocach.
Davis has fought once this year, knocking out Frank Martin in the eighth round to retain his WBA title. He had been rumoured to be facing Vasyl Lomachenko, but the Ukrainian superstar decided to take the rest of 2024 off.
