Bill Haney says negotiations are moving full-steam ahead for a title unification between Devin Haney and Rolando Romero.
Reports indicate that a fight could take place on May 30 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Haney currently holds the WBO welterweight title, which he seized in November 2025 by dismantling Brian Norman Jr. in Riyadh. While the public is loud for a Ryan Garcia rematch, the Haney camp is focused on legacy—aiming to become a unified champion in a third weight class.
Romero enters is WBA welterweight champion after beating Ryan Garcia last spring. Reports indicate the fight would be a premier event for Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), likely headlining a massive Amazon Prime Video broadcast.

Despite the mutual interest, the WBA holds the final veto. While unifications usually take precedence, the WBA considers Romero’s defense against his mandatory Shakhram Giyasov to be “overdue.” To proceed with Haney, Romero’s team must obtain a “Special Permit” from the WBA.
“Just got off the phone with Louie DeCuba [Romero’s promoter]. The ball’s back in your court. May 30th. Deebo is coming,” Bill said
If that fight does not go ahead, there has also been mentions of Shakur Stevenson. Shakur recently became a four-weight world champion after beating Teofimo Lopez Jr. in January to become the WBO Welterweight Champion. Stevenson has stated that he is willing to move up to welterweight if his opponents accept a ten-pound rehydration clause. If terms can be agreed, Bill also named Shakur as a legitimate target.
“Shakur is easy work for Devin. That’s an easier fight than [Vasiliy] Lomachenko. I haven’t seen him fight anybody I would even think is anywhere near a Devin Haney. I don’t want to give away too much because it could be a possible fight next, but Shakur is on the list. He has a hell of a management team, coaching team and fanbase but when you talk about Devin, he has the best jab in boxing,” Bill stated
