Devin Haney has teamed up with Shane Mosley for his Jose Ramirez fight in an attempt to increase his knockout power.

Haney has developed a reputation for not being the biggest puncher since his last stoppage came in 2019 against Zaur Abdullaev. His current record stands at 31-0, with 15 KOs to his name. There have been several reasons put forward to explain this. Haney naturally fights defensively, staying behind his jab without overcommitting in order to pick off his opponents. This served him very well until he faced Ryan Garcia, who dropped him three times in a majority decision win. However, the result was turned into a no-contest once Ryan failed VADA tests for Ostarine.

The fight showed that Haney struggled to deal with someone who was of a similar size to him as Garcia found success in walking him down. However, Haney has been making weight not natural to his weight class for a significant amount of time. He was weight-drained during his time at 135 pounds even if he became the Undisputed Lightweight Champion. He would eventually move up to 140 pounds, having had just two fights there against Regis Prograis and Garcia.

Mosley On Haney

Even for the Garcia weigh-in, Haney did not look as healthy as he had previously been. He now faces Ramirez at 147 pounds in his first at welterweight. Haney’s walk-around weight is well over 147, meaning he has room to grow further up the weights. Mosley developed a reputation for being one of the most explosive punchers in the sport. Now, he is giving back by advising Haney, as Mosley believes he can stop Ramirez during the second half of the fight.

“Bill decided to have me come up to LA, and show Devin some of the power tricks that I know. Jose can expect some good and good power [from Haney]. Devin has always had that good power. It’s that little things that you have to do just to turn over to get the knockout. That little snap at the end of the shot. I was showing him that and where he can feel it.” “I took him through the process of it, and where he can feel it. Now he knows that, and he’s very different. He’s very deadly for a lot of the people he fights now. I believe sixth or seventh round, he gets him,” Mosley said
