Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren are still hopeful of a Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua fight.

The fight looked likely after Fury’s consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, as Joshua had also suffered a defeat to Daniel Dubois. However, The Gypsy King announced his retirement from the sport, while Joshua is currently injured and not expected to return until the summer.

There is speculation that Fury is using his retirement to secure a bigger purse for a comeback. He has shown this previously when he retired after beating Dillian Whyte, only to eventually return and secure the Usyk fights. The two Usyk fights earned him over $100 million, as a Joshua fight has the potential to do similar numbers. Hearn and Warren were still keen on making that fight.

Hearn And Warren

“AJ Fury, who knows what the future holds?,” Hearn

“The same answer. That’s the fight that we all wanted to see. Us, the British, and the fighters wanted it, but it’s never too late. For some reason, it didn’t happen. Who knows if Tyson decides if he’s fed up mowing the lawn, it may happen,” Warren

Nevertheless, the fight is not as big as what it could have been. Boxing fans are too familiar with this, just as they experienced when Amir Khan faced Kell Brook. Khan was no longer in his prime, as Brook managed to stop him to secure one of the most iconic wins on his resume. Khan later admitted that he knew he was a finished fighter when he got hit by a one-two combination from Brook, something he had never seen coming.

Fury suffered losses against Usyk, which are bound to have impacted him mentally. Fury always said that no man could beat him, often citing himself as one of the greatest heavyweights of his era. However, he ultimately got defeated by Usyk, who he repeatedly branded as a middleweight and a blown-up cruiserweight. Fury also struggled to accept the decisions, claiming that he had been hard done by even when most of the boxing community had Usyk winning.

Will It Happen?

Those are two losses that Fury will have to live with. While Fury could come back and sign off on a positive role by beating Joshua, there is also a risk that he comes up short. Joshua, although losing to Dubois, knows that this is a mega opportunity to put some of his defeats behind him. That is why Fury will have to consider whether he wants to take this bout. Bob Arum advised him not to.

“I think Tyson Fury owes it to himself and his family to remain happily retired. I believe he has a lot in front of him because he is a good communicator, and he is an entertainer. [And] I don’t think he should step in the ring again because I think he’s had enough, and fortunately, in the last few years of his career, he earned so much money that his family, himself are never going to want for money.

“I would advise him never to go back into the ring but to make himself useful as a spokes person because he can communicate extraordinarily well. People are intrigued by him and I think he can do a lot of good,” Arum said
