Joe Cordina faces Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz on July 5, as we look at how the Welshman can approach this fight.

Cordina moves up to lightweight following his last fight at 130, where he suffered his first defeat against Anthony Cacace. He had been chasing the Shakur Stevenson fight, only for that to fall through once Shakur experienced a hand injury. Cordina is the former IBF Super Featherweight Champion, as he seeks to become a two-weight world champion. Meanwhile, Quiroz has 17 wins, with 13 coming by way of knockout. He suffered a loss against Hector Garcia Dolores in 2021. However, since then, he has racked up five KO wins in a row.

Tactics

Cordina will look to use his boxing fundamentals. The jab will be key to establishing distance to disrupt Quiroz’s rhythm and set up his combinations. He should prioritize movement and angles over standing and trading with a potentially heavier-handed opponent. Quiroz has a high KO percentage, with 17 wins that include 13 KOs. He has also stopped his last five opponents. Cordina’s agility and technical prowess can nullify this.

If Cordina maintains a comfortable range where he can land his jabs and straight punches, he may make Quiroz struggle to connect with his power shots. When Quiroz tries to close the gap, Cordina should use some lateral movement. Cordina should look to land quick, sharp combinations rather than trying to engage in a brawl.

Mixing in body shots will be crucial to slowing down Quiroz and opening up shots upstairs. By using the full range of the ring, Cordina can tire out Quiroz. Quiroz may also overcommit, leaving him open to counters. Cordina’s team will have to manage his move to lightweight, having boxed at 130 previously. Cordina was ready to put on a show.

“If I’m going to be world champion again, it’s someone I have to get through. They offered me two opponents – one was 19-0 with six knockouts, the other was 17-1. This one I have to respect his power, it’ll keep me switched on. I’ll be firing on all cylinders,” Cordina said
