Mike Tyson (50-6-2, 44 KOs) believes he is a more driven fighter now than he was 20 years ago.
In a few days, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ will set foot, once again, into the professional ring for an eight-round tango of brutality against ‘The Problem Child’ Jake Paul (10-1, 7 KOs). With the fight date edging closer, fans have expressed concerns about how the former champ would fare against his significantly younger opponents. Tyson put their fears to rest by revealing how his mentality and skillset have changed over the years.
Tyson was recently interviewed by Manouk Akopyan. In conversation, he was reminded of the concerns that fans had about him fighting Paul who was over 30 years his junior.
“Thank you very much for being concerned. But I am fighting. I’m going to be okay. I was a different person then. I was using narcotics and alcohol back then. I’m not that person anymore. I see a better picture of myself now. I see the light. I see the world from a different perspective now,” he said. Tyson further mentioned that he is aware of the dangers of his fight against Paul. However, he believes that his hunger for greatness and his rigorous training schedule have made him more than ready for the fight.
“I’ve got the rounds in me. Listen, I’m sparring young guys, 30s, 20s, I’m sparring young guys and they’re hitting me real hard. It wasn’t a picnic when I first started training. I’m fighting with younger guys and they’re really giving me a shellacking at first. I’m doing my share now,” he said. The boxing legend has also hinted that his comeback might not be a one time. And that there might potentially be more exciting events in the future.
Tyson has always been vocal about wanting to make his late mentor and father figure, Cus D’Amato, proud. And now with the Paul fight around the corner, he is confident that his resilience and fighting spirit, at the age of 58, would have made D’Amato ecstatic. “Cus D’Amato would be so happy that I’m doing this and proving to the world that age is nothing but a number,” he said during the same interview.
Regardless of the outcome of the fight, Tyson’s drive and hunger for greatness, at his age, has undoubtedly shown fans why he’ll always remain D’Amato’s ‘Kid Dynamite’.
