Chris Eubank is one of the most notable figures in boxing even years after he hung up his gloves as a professional.
From Eubank’s rivalry with Nigel Benn to being in the corner of his son, Chris Eubank Jr., ‘Simply the Best’ is one of the most beloved fighters in Britain.
His 13-year professional career would see him become a two-weight world champion before retiring with a record of 45-5-2.
However, before becoming a professional, Eubank had a moment he was not proud of.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Call Chris Eubank, the former world champion told the story of a surprising fight where Eubank bit his opponent.
Eubank said that the fight was one he felt he couldn’t win, and the illegal action came as a result of frustration.
“I had an amateur fight in about 1984. In this fight, I couldn’t win,” Eubank said. “This particular man had me… He was just all cool, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t get any footing in the fight.”
The British boxing legend said that the fight took place in Madison Square Garden, and the bout was a quarter-final match.
“I had to win this fight to prove to myself that I was going to be able to do something in the future, and I lost this fight.”
During the fight, Eubank said, “I got so frustrated. I bit him. I bit the opponent in a clinch. This was a great lesson to me because I was so ashamed.”
As well as saying he was ‘bawling’ crying after the fight, Eubank said he was terrified that his mother would find out about the incident.
Although Eubank delivered terrifying knockouts at times, he was not perceived by the public as a dirty fighter. However, following the story of him biting an opponent in the amateurs, he explained another ‘ungentlemanly’ action he did.
In the second fight with Benn, Eubank explained how he landed a disrespectful punch on his rival.
“When I was fighting Nigel Benn in the second fight, we got into a clinch and the referee said, ‘Break’. We broke and I put my hand out, which is to touch gloves. Then, I hit him with a right straight away.”
Eubank said, “I didn’t get away with the punch,” before describing the action as ‘bad behaviour’.
The now-retired fighter also said that these kind of actions were ‘rare’ in his career.
