‘I’m Not Going To Be Around With Picket Signs’: Deontay Wilder Talks Anthony Joshua Fight

Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) wants the Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) fight, but he isn’t holding his breath.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ is making a comeback after a yearlong hiatus with a fight against journeyman Tyrrell Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. Ever since the announcement of his comeback was made, there have been talks about a potential heavyweight magnum opus between Wilder and Joshua. While Wilder would personally love to see the fight reach fruition, it certainly won’t be on top of his mind.

Talking to The Ring magazine, Wilder opened up the possibility of the fight and about his plans after the Herndon fight.

“If that fight against Joshua comes, and everything is right, why not?” he said. “We’ll deal with the situation when it happens. He’s still in the business, and I am as well. I want all of them. I am not going after just one particular person. If it’s a great fight to be made, I am there. I want to make the best fights people want to see.”

Joshua, who is recovering from an elbow injury, is planning to step inside the ring later this year. He was last seen in September, where he fought Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight title, albeit unsuccessfully.

Wilder, on the other hand, has big plans to reign at the pinnacle of the heavyweight division. Undoubtedly one of the heaviest punchers in the division, his last few performances have been anything but spectacular. And now, with his comeback around the corner, it will be worth witnessing if he still has his old fire and if he can make big fights happen.

While the Joshua fight is certainly going to be a crowd puller, Wilder is not going to run around trying to make it happen.

“But I am not going to be around with picket signs asking for the fight. I am not going to do that. I never chased anyone. If people didn’t want to fight me, it was what it was.” he said. “I always wanted the biggest fights possible in my career.”

“I Don’t Care About Who”

While major names like Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have been thrown around as the next possible opponents for Wilder, he isn’t looking around at the name tag, provided the fight gives him an opportunity to prove himself.

“I want the biggest fights possible,” Wilder said during the same interview. “I don’t care about who the individual is. I’m not dwelling on these guys. These guys wouldn’t give me an opportunity to save their lives because they were stuck on not losing. I just wanted to be undisputed, but many people did not have me on their agenda because of how dangerous I am.”
