Jaron Ennis is one of the leading names in the welterweight division, but is he a hype job?

Ennis is the Unified Welterweight Champion, having defeated Eimantas Stanionis in his previous fight. The win extended his record to 34-0, as he became the WBA, IBF and Ring Magazine Welterweight Champion. The win solidified his position as one of the leading welterweights in the division. However, there are still questions over his resume. His other big wins came against Karen Chukhadzhian and David Avanesyan. Neither of those boxers are elite names, but Ennis can only beat who is in front of him.

A fight against Terence Crawford failed after the latter moved up from 147 to 154. Bud will also box Canelo Alvarez at 168 in his next fight, ruling out Ennis. Meanwhile, the other champions in the division such as Mario Barrios and Brian Norman Jr. have not shown much desire to take that fight. Barrios will face Manny Pacquiao in his next fight, while Norman Jr.’s team reportedly turned down an offer previously.

Bradley On Ennis

Ennis’ cause has also not been helped by him being much bigger than 147. Boots has said he would like to box at 154 and 168, leading to accusations that he is a weight bully. Those claims won’t be helped by the news that Teofimo Lopez is chasing him. Lopez has boxed at 135 and 140, winning belts in both weight classes. Teo is now eying Ennis at 147, having beaten some of the best fighters, such as Vasiliy Lomachenko and Josh Taylor. Those names are arguably bigger than who Boots has beaten, as Tim Bradley questioned Ennis’ record.

“Name an elite fighter that Boots has beaten? I see the talent. I see the ability. [And] I see all of that. But name a guy. He doesn’t have a guy on his resume, but do you know a guy that has a guy on his resume that were elite? Teofimo Lopez. Do you think I’m supporting this clown? I’m not supporting this clown. I’m trying to drop y’all some knowledge.

“It’s not an easy fight for Boots. It’s a difficult fight for both guys. However, Teofimo Lopez has more experience at the elite level. He’s athletic. He’s sure of himself. He rises to the occasion. He likes these types of fights. Do you think he’s picking on Boots because he wants a fight for a payday? Hell no. He knows what he can do, and I see it, too,” Bradley stated
