Cruiserweight boxer Jai Opetaia has inked a deal with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing promotion.
The agreement with Dana White’s promotion brings the reigning lineal, Ring Magazine, and IBF cruiserweight champion into the Zuffa fold just as the company prepares for its multi-year broadcast debut on Paramount+. Their first event will take place on January 23, headlined by Callum Smith and Carlos Ocampo.
The southpaw, Opetaia, has solidified his status as the top 200-pound fighter with three consecutive knockout victories, stopping IBF mandatory Huseyin Cinkara, Claudio Squeo and David Nyika. Opetaia’s team has already confirmed that a contract is in place to face the winner of the Noel Mikaeljan vs. Badou Jack rematch. Elsewhere, “Zurdo” Ramire is on course for a Cinco de Mayo clash against David Benavidez on May 2. While he won’t compete on the first card, Jai’s presence as an active champion signals that Dana White intends to apply the “best fight the best” UFC model to boxing.
The most immediate benefit for Opetaia is the marketing machine of TKO Group. Historically, cruiserweights—even elite ones—struggle for recognition in the U.S. market. By joining Zuffa, Opetaia will be cross-promoted during UFC broadcasts and across social media platforms that reach tens of millions of casual combat sports fans. The Paramount+ deal ensures his fights stream on a platform alongside UFC content, removing the paywall barriers that often limit a boxer’s growth.
There is a real possibility that Opetaia may eventually have to vacate his IBF belt if the sanctioning body’s mandatory requirements clash with Zuffa’s scheduling. Opetaia likely feels that as the Lineal/Ring champion, he doesn’t need to prove he is #1. By fighting the “best of the best” under the Zuffa banner—such as the winner of the Noel Mikaelian vs. Badou Jack rematch—he can maintain his status as the division’s true king.
