IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) is headlining an event in his home country of Australia in a card that streams on Wednesday early morning here in the States. The 29-year-old Aussie has some big unification fights on the horizon but must first get past the hard-hitting, undefeated David Nyika (10-0, 9 KOs).
Opetaia is coming off a 2024 campaign that saw him glove up twice as he scored a unanimous decision over Mairis Breidis and a TKO over Jack Massey. Turki Alalshikh is high on Opetaia and wants to see him in fights against the other champions, with a super fight against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk potentially on the horizon.
Nyika showcased himself well in May, scoring a fourth-round TKO over Michael Seitz in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 29-year-old from New Zealand, who now resides in Australia, has only been a pro for 4 years, but he has been fast-tracked and now has the opportunity of a lifetime. Can he capitalize off it given that he is a heavy odds underdog going into Wednesday’s fight on DAZN?
