Jake Paul is never short on confidence, but even he admits that stepping in with Gervonta Davis next month won’t be straightforward.
Paul is back in the ring for what’s being billed as an exhibition, taking on WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in a matchup sure to draw plenty of attention.
This will be Paul’s first appearance since his summer bout against former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which ended in a draw. Now, he shifts back into the exhibition realm for this latest challenge.
And while he managed to go eight rounds with Mike Tyson last year, Paul isn’t underestimating what’s ahead. He knows Davis presents a completely different set of challenges.
Paul has been in the ring with former UFC champions during his short boxing career, but he admits that facing Davis has him feeling uneasy.
Davis, the current WBA champion, is well known for his power and has recorded 28 knockouts so far.
Paul acknowledges that even though he’s fought Tyson before, this exhibition with Davis feels like a different challenge entirely.
Speaking to TMZ, Paul said: “Internally, I’m the most scared going into a fight that I have ever been. Because I know how good these people are that I’m sparring and being able to see how good they are, knowing how good ‘Tank’ (Gervonta Davis) is. It’s actually going to be my toughest test to date,” Paul said.
There had been talk earlier this year about a possible matchup between Paul and former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, but instead, he’s now lined up to face Davis.
Despite the change in plans, the fight with Joshua isn’t completely off the table. That’s according to Eddie Hearn, who’s promoted Joshua for years.
However, Hearn believes that by choosing to fight Davis next month, Paul is putting any future bout with Joshua at risk.
