Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis Dominates David Avanesyan in Successful Return Fight in Philadelphia

On Saturday, July 13, in the main event at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, we saw Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) make a successful defence of his IBF welterweight title as he defeated durable Armenian fighter David Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs). The entire card will be shown live globally on DAZN and promoted by Matchroom Boxing.

The opening round saw “Boots” start quickly, letting his jab go in the orthodox stance before effortlessly switching to southpaw. The Philly fighter hit “Ava” with a low blow, and after the Armenian national recovered – the hand speed and accuracy of Ennis saw him in complete control. The second round saw “Ava” trying to force the pace and punch in between the shots from Ennis, but “Boots” looked comfortable, putting his shots together.

The third round saw a brave Avanesyan throwing back, but the body shots from “Boots” ensured this was a good round for the Philly fighter. After a dominant round four, round five saw “Ava” start well before Ennis knocked him down with a beautifully timed counter left. The rest of the fifth saw Ennis continue to work the body – and before the sixth round, the referee, on advice from the ringside physician, decided to pull out the Armenian national.

“Boots” is back with a KO win.

Post Fight Quotes

In the post-fight interview, Ennis said: “I felt good.” Despite feeling good, he revealed he wasn’t completely happy: “My timing was a little off.”

When asked what he wanted next and if it was big fights he craved, Ennis said: “Terence Crawford, anyone else, let’s make it happen.”

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said: “The future of Boots Ennis is the future of boxing.”

When talking about future plans, Hearn said: “The plan is unifications.”

Undercard

Jalil Hackett (9-0, 7 KOs) won in the co-main event as he defeated Peter Dobson (16-2, 9 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 10-round welterweight bout, with the judges scorecards reading 97-93 x2 and 96-94, all in favour of “Major.”

Skye Nicolson (11-0, 1 KO) put on a boxing clinic as she dominated Dyana Vargas (19-2, 12 KOs) to win by unanimous decision, retaining her WBC women’s featherweight title with all three judges scorecards reading 100-90.

Khalil Coe (9-0-1, 7 KOs) made quick work of Kwame Ritter (11-2, 9 KOs), winning by second-round TKO in their scheduled 10-round light heavyweight fight.

Before the Bell

Christian Diaz (29-4, 18 KOs) won against Derlyn Hernandez (12-2-1, 10 KOs) by second-round TKO in their super featherweight fight.

Christian Carto (23-1, 16 KOs) won against Carlow Buitrafo (38-14-1, 22 KOs), with Buitrafo’s corner withdrawing their man at the end of the third round in their junior featherweight bout.

Ismail Muhammad (5-0, 3 KOs) recovered from an early knockdown to defeat Frank Brown in their junior welterweight contest, with the judge’s scorecards reading 58-54 x2 and 57-55.

Dennis Thompson (1-0) won on his debut 40-36 against Fernando Joaquin Valdez (1-8, 0 KOs) in their bantamweight bout.
