Jaron Ennis has re-signed with Matchroom Boxing, as he aims to make his name in the junior middleweight division.

Ennis joined Matchroom Boxing with a view to becoming undisputed at 147. Boots eventually became the unified welterweight champion, stopping Emanuel Stanionis in his last fight to unify. There had been suggestions that Ennis would chase undisputed, only to then move up to 154 pounds. Ennis has now committed himself to Matchroom, as we look at who he could face next.

Options

Eddie Hearn has mentioned a possible fight against the WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Champion, Vergil Ortiz Jr. The pair were reportedly in talks to face each other, only for the fight to break down over the weight. Ennis allegedly wanted it at 147, while Ortiz could not make welterweight, having moved up to 154 following his previous struggles to make 147. A win over Ortiz would put Ennis in line to face the full champion Sebastian Fundora and chase a title in a second weight class.

There are also a whole host of other names Ennis could target for the big fights. Tim Tszyu is coming off a loss to Fundora for the second time. However, he is the former WBO Junior Middleweight Champion, who has been in with the big names such as Bakhram Murtazaliev. Tszyu would provide Ennis a good introduction into the 154-pound divison.

There are also big domestic clashes out there. Keith Thurman recently had his first fight since 2023 when he stopped Brock Jarvis in March. Thurman has previously said that he wants the fight, even stating that Ennis’ camp should send him the contract. Thurman is also a former unified welterweight champion, who only has one loss on his record, which came against Manny Pacquiao in 2019.

The Future

Equally, there is a chance to make the Jermell Charlo fight. Charlo has not boxed since 2023 when he came up short against Canelo Alvarez at 168. He is the former undisputed junior welterweight champion, who has said he wants to box again. While it is not clear who Charlo will face, there is the chance to face off against Ennis if he returns to 154. Either way, the future looks bright.

“Working with Eddie and Matchroom is just a great connection, I love how they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make me a superstar. I’m ready to get going at 154lbs and I am hunting the big names and the belts; now it’s time to shut everybody up.

“I’m delighted that Jaron has committed himself to Matchroom and DAZN. Since we first started working with him last April, we’ve proved together that he is one of very few fighters in the US that can draw huge crowds in the arena, with the three events we’ve staged with Jaron pulling in well over 30,000 fans at the gate, and that’s added to big numbers on DAZN. I’m so excited to see Boots set about the 154lbs division, where you are going to see a different beast and his full arsenal on display,” Hearn
