Joe Cordina has plenty to prove when he faces Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz on July 5, as we preview the upcoming fight.
Cordina suffered his first loss, losing to Anthony Cacace in his last fight. The loss cost him his IBF junior-lightweight title. Cordina had been on course to face Shakur Stevenson. However, the latter pulled out with an injury, as the fight never went ahead. Cordina has teamed up with a new trainer for this fight, replacing Tony Sims with Barry Smith.
Cordina also saw his Matchroom Boxing contract expire, which has kept him inactive. Cordina’s last win was against Edward Vazquez in 2023, as he hopes to establish himself in his first fight at lightweight.
Quiroz has a 17–1 record, with 13 KOs to his name. His only loss came against Hector Garcia Dolores in 2021. Since then, he has racked up five wins on the bounce, which have all been way of stoppage. He has boxed twice at 130 pounds before, as he aims to give Cordina something to think about.
“I’ve had loads of conversations with Eddie [Hearn] about coming back to Cardiff and fighting at Cardiff Castle, Cardiff City Stadium or Arms Park. But it’s got to make sense financially for everyone and it’s got to happen at a certain time of the year because those stadiums are all outdoors. “There’s loads of things in the pipeline. But first and foremost I need to get past this week, because if I don’t, my chances of winning another world title are gone,” Cordina said
