Joe Louis managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in an epic comeback.
At the peak of his powers, the warrior was a phenom inside the squared circle, renowned for his dynamite hands and accuracy.
For many, Louis is one of the most influential fighters of all time, and undoubtedly one of the most successful the heavyweight division has ever seen.
And on a night that has gone down in the boxing history books, he landed a magnificent knockout blow.
Sheesh: Joe Louis was dropped by ‘Cinderella Man’ in thrilling world title contest
On June 18, 1941, Joe Louis put his NYSAC, NBA and Ring Magazine heavyweight world titles on the line against ex-light heavyweight world champion, Billy Conn, at Polo Grounds in New York, USA.
‘The Brown Bomber’ started well, staggering his foe in round two, but in the third segment, everything changed.
In a surprising moment, Conn detonated a huge right hand that had his opponent desperately holding on, before another huge shot in the fourth buckled Louis’ knees.
Over the next few rounds, the champion was able to work his way back into the contest, landing heavy artillery, including a monstrous left hook.
However, after recovering in his corner, Conn cruised through the next few rounds, wobbling his adversary with humongous shots in the eighth and ninth.
By the twelfth, Louis was in real trouble as the smaller man battered him from one side of the ring to the other, with a left hook almost taking the legend out.
Sensing the end was nigh, in the 13th, Conn, who was way up on points, went for the finish, and he more than paid the price.
Louis managed to connect with a tremendous body shot, before methodically breaking down his rival, landing blow after blow, until a right sent the challenger crashing towards the canvas, resulting in Louis retaining his belts in a truly dramatic affair.
Louis’ come-from-behind win against Conn was nothing short of spectacular.
However, Teddy Atlas doesn’t think it’s the greatest of all time.
Having trained some of the best in the business, it’s fair to say the coach knows his boxing.
And in a recent podcast, Atlas revealed his number one boxing comeback ever.
