Anthony Joshua has made a public statement in the aftermath of his car accident, which took the lives of his two friends: Sina Ghami (his strength and conditioning coach) and Latif “Latz” Ayodele (his personal trainer).
Joshua was involved in a car accident on December 29, while he was in Nigeria. He was there on vacation, following his sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul on December 19. The accident resulted in the arrest and charge of the driver Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode. He is facing four counts, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The case has been officially adjourned until January 20, 2026, for the commencement of the trial. Joshua has now paid tribute to his two late friends.
Thereafter, a wave of controversy hit social media after a private FaceTime call between Joshua and former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was leaked. The video captured a vulnerable “AJ” admitting that the reality of the loss “still hasn’t hit me yet.” Usman issued a heartfelt apology, taking “full responsibility” for the breach of privacy.

“You scared the world. It’s crazy because, obviously, we deal with the haters and all the bulls**** each and every time. It sucks that it takes something serious like this to really see how many people have their eyes on you,” Usman
“Life is short, man. And now look, I get to speak with you for the first time,” Joshua
“After seeing what’s being written it’s quite heartbreaking. Being on camera that whole day in preparation for The AKO show, it completely slipped my mind that my conversation was recorded. I realised after and asked about it. I take full responsibility for not properly watching the video that was released and keeping my private conversation with my brother AJ private. SMH big L on me. That’s not something I would ever do to a friend/ brother,” Usman stated
Promoter Eddie Hearn has requested “time and privacy” for Joshua, stating that all boxing discussions are currently on hold. While rumors circulated that a man claiming to be Joshua’s uncle said the boxer was retiring, there has been no official confirmation from Joshua.
“I think we live in a world today where everyone feels like they deserve to know how he’s feeling and what’s next. I’m getting calls everyday from media, like ‘can you give us an update on his career?’ It’s like, are you serious?
“Right now probably whilst he’ll need strength around him, right now he should be left alone to recover physically and emotionally and spiritually. Anything you hear about his career — until you hear it from AJ, don’t believe it. Right now there’s no comment on AJ’s career until we have an opportunity for that time to come where a conversation should take place, and that’s no where near happening right now,” Hearn revealed
