Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is back in Mexico after being deported from the United States in response to his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in July.
Reports indicate that Chavez Jr. was accused of entering the U.S illegally, resulting in his detention last month. The news was a massive shock especially since he was coming off a boxing defeat to Jake Paul just days before. Chavez was allegedly to have had an arrest warrant issued against him since 2023 in Mexico over alleged charges of ties with an alleged terrorist group Sinaloa Cartel, as per the U.S government. Chavez is also alleged to have helped traffic firearms, ammunition, and explosives. The boxer spent a total of 46 days in detention, as he is now in Mexico at a prison in Sonora.
“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security deported Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. to Mexican authorities to face charges in accordance with his country’s justice system. This action reflects the strong cooperation between our governments, demonstrating that collaboration yields results and strengthens the security of both nations,” Ronald Johnson (U.S. Ambassador to Mexico)
This situation effectively puts an end to any chance of Chavez Jr. resuming his boxing career. At 39 years old, he was already past his prime, and his recent loss to Jake Paul highlighted his decline. The fallout from being connected to a major drug cartel would make it difficult for any major promoter to work with him.
It tarnishes not only his personal reputation but also the legendary name of his father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., one of the greatest boxers of all time. While Chavez Sr. has publicly supported his son and maintained his innocence, the accusations cloud a shadow over the family’s legacy.
The fact that Chavez Jr. was wanted in Mexico but arrested by ICE in the U.S. and subsequently deported indicates a degree of cooperation between law enforcement agencies. The charges against him in Mexico, which include trafficking firearms and explosives, are extremely serious and could lead to a lengthy prison sentence. Fans had plenty to say.
