George Kambosos Jr. and Jake Wyllie had their first face-off before their junior welterweight clash.
Kambosos has a lot to prove based on his recent form. He lost his last bout against Vasiliy Lomachenko for the vacant IBF Lightweight Title. That was Kambosos’ third loss out of his last four fights, as he moved up to 140. He then decided to sign with Matchroom Boxing as he makes his debut under the promotional company.
Kambosos has eyes on fights against Teomfio Lopez, Richardson Hitchins, or Liam Paro, provided he wins. But he will have to overcome some adversity, as his initial opponent, Daud Yordan, withdrew with an illness. Wyllie is no pushover, as he has developed a reputation as a knockout artist. His current record stands at 16-1-0. 15 of his wins are KOs, showing Kambosos will have to be on guard. He is a fellow Australian, as he has the chance to cause an upset on the biggest stage.
“It’s experience. It hasn’t happened that much in my career. I had such a big amateur career where you don’t know who you’re fighting on the day of the fight. Nothing changes. We like that he’s a respectful, humble young kid. He’s got a nice record, 16-1, with 15 knockouts and the same style. We compared him to who we’re sparring, and who we were fighting. It was a no-brainer. This kid deserves the opportunity. I’m looking forward to handling business.
“I found out on Monday morning that Daud had collapsed, cutting weight, or somethings gone wrong. We said, ‘Alright, you’re out. Who’s next?’ Jake Wyllie is the guy that made the most sense. He’s coming into the lights, the big show, but he’s a good humble kid. Come Saturday, I’m going to handle my business and take him out of his misery. He can come at me. We’re fully prepared. But at 140, how I feel at the weight, I’ll be coming to him. I’m very focused. I’ve got a lot on the line, too. I’m giving the kid a bit of exposure being around the big lights. No disrespect, but that’s where it ends,” Kambosos said
“We’ve got this opportunity and I’ve been doing everything right, so there’s no reason why I wouldn’t take this fight and I’m going in to it fully confident that I can do a great job. Everyone goes on about the knockouts but, look, the knockouts just come. I don’t go looking for them. It just happens naturally. “So I really believe that George hasn’t been in there with a puncher like myself and I think on Saturday night I’ll show that,” Wyllie stated
