Sebastian Fundora vs Tim Tszyu was a highly anticipated rematch after their wild first fight, which ended in a split decision win for “The Towering Inferno.” It was a dominant showing from Fundora, who retained his WBC super welterweight world title, while it was a devastating loss for Tszyu (25-3, 18KOs). Immediately after the fight, Keith Thurman spoke to The Punch Podcast and gave his honest reaction to Tszyu’s defeat.
The rematch didn’t take long to catch fire, with Fundora knocking Tszyu down with a straight left in the opening round.
Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) dominated after that, using his reach to control the distance and whip punches in from range. Tszyu did have his moments, but Fundora was landing heavy combinations – and when returning to his corner at the end of round seven, the fight was waved off, ensuring “The Towering Inferno” retained his WBC super welterweight world title.
Keith Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) has suffered from injuries and inactivity in recent years. Following his only career loss against Manny Pacquiao, Thurman comfortably beat Mario Barrios. Three years of inactivity followed before “One Time” travelled to Sydney, Australia, stopping Brock Jarvis earlier this year.
When talking to The Punch Podcast, Thurman said: “He just thought he was the S**T! He believed boxing in the real world outside of Australia, the plethora of talent & skills, was something he was going to fly over here & handle.(Opponents)Like myself if you take me over to the Gold Coast I will end Tim Tszyu’s career. Pay me & I’ll do it. I’ll get rid of Tszyu”
With three defeats in his last four fights, it’s hard to envision a significant comeback for Tszyu. Despite the Americans’ inactivity, he’s expected to be sharp with his work and have too much for the Australian.
