Unified welterweight champion Lauren Price defends her WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO, and Ring Magazine titles against Stephanie Piñeiro Aquino on April 4, as we preview this fight.
Price unified the 147-pound division after her masterful performance against Natasha Jonas in March 2025. This homecoming serves as a celebration of her legacy before a potential “undisputed” mega-fight later this year. Meanwhile, the 35-year-old Aquino is the reigning WBA Interim Champion. Promoters are reportedly keen for an undisputed bout with WBO champion Mikaela Mayer. Mayer has explicitly stated her desire to move back down to 147 to face Price for all four major belts after having unified at 154.
“As a fighter, of course I want to box Mikaela, I want to become undisputed champion, but how can you say that can’t be a stadium fight when she’s such a big name, I’m a big name, it’s a massive fight. I think that’s where we’re stuck at the minute. “I think we both deserve the pay day as well, if I’m honest,” Price said
“I respect everything Lauren Price has achieved, but I have worked all my life for this moment, and I am ready to show I am the best in the world. Lauren may have the home fans on her side, but I have a country behind me too. I am coming to take those belts back to Puerto Rico,” Aquino stated
For Lauren Price, the strategy remains rooted in the “hit and don’t get hit” philosophy that earned her Olympic gold. Despite being the shorter fighter by three inches, Price uses a “darting” style; she enters the pocket with lightning-quick 3-4 punch combinations and exits before her opponent can counter.
Against Aquino, expect Price to rely heavily on her lead right hook, a weapon that repeatedly staggered Jonas. Because both fighters are southpaws, the “lead foot battle” will be less about circling outside and more about Price using her superior footwork to create angles that keep Aquino resetting.
Aquino will aim to use her length to turn this into a long-range fight. Her recent performances, including a dominant TKO over Marie Pier Houle in late 2025, showcased she can box. Aquino’s path to an upset lies in her ability to “catch” Price coming in. While Price is fast, she can occasionally be aggressive to a fault. Aquino will likely look to plant her feet and fire straight left hands down the pipe the moment Price initiates an exchange. By using the jab to disrupt Price’s rhythm and digging to the body, Aquino hopes to disrupt Price’s rhythm.
