Liam Paro (27-1, 16 KOs) takes on Paddy Donovan (14-2, 11 KOs) in a IBF Welterweight Title Eliminator on January 16.

The fight takes place from the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Australia, headlining the undercard of the Michael Zerafa vs. Nikita Tszyu event. Paro enters the contest on a positive note, carrying a two-fight win streak after securing victories over Jonathan Navarro in June and David Papot in September. Having moved up in weight from 140 where he lost his IBF belt to Richardson Hitchens in December 2024, Paro is now intent on securing his position as a mandatory challenger at 147.

Meanwhile, Donovan faces immense pressure as he attempts to halt a difficult run of back-to-back losses to Lewis Crocker. The rivalry with Crocker proved particularly challenging: their first bout in March ended in an eight-round disqualification defeat for Donovan after he struck his opponent after the bell. The September rematch, which was for the vacant IBF welterweight title, resulted in a split decision loss.

Reaction

“There has been an agreement reached on that fight. While it hasn’t been officially signed off, everything has been agreed on. A man’s handshake is pretty much as good as a contract. So that’s where we’re at right now. It is agreed. It’s going ahead. Liam Paro will be fighting Paddy Donovan. This will be a final eliminator for that world title, and I’m stoked for Liam Paro. Because of the journey he’s had, becoming a world champion, losing his world title, and then fighting his way back to that position, we’ve been really excited for him to be on this journey to get back to the top where he belongs, and this is the fight that puts him there.”

“We’re stoked that Paddy Donovan’s locked in. We’ll get him out here, introduce him to Queensland and send him home with another loss, because Liam’s headed for the top. This is a very tough fight. Don’t get me wrong, I thought Paddy looked the better in that fight [against Lewis Crocker]. Mark my words: Liam Paro’s a world champion, and he’ll be back at the top,” No Limit’s George Rose (promoter)

The Approach

Paro is the physically stronger fighter, intent on using his size at the new weight class to break down his opponent. His success hinges on his jab, and closing the distance to unleash his straight left and body shots. If Paro can dominate the lead-foot battle, consistently circle to his right, and force Donovan to fight off the back foot, he will wear down his man. However, Donovan is a slick counter-puncher who can punish mistakes.

Donovan’s path to victory lies in exploiting his superior lateral movement and maintaining distance control, using the ring space to force Paro to expend energy chasing him. The counter-punch will be his most valuable weapon; Donovan needs to land sharp combinations as Paro closes the gap, immediately pivoting out of danger to reset.
