Rampant PED usage has long been a stain on the integrity of the sport of boxing.
With Jaime Munguia ’s (45-2, 35 KOs) recent positive drug test results, the number of boxers on this list continues to grow. However, this is a controversy that sports veterans like Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) do not wish to get into.
Pacquiao was talking to reporters after his official press conference for his fight against Mario Barrios on July 19 in Las Vegas, NV. In conversation, he was asked about his advice for younger boxers who wished to have a long career.
“First, God, and second is like discipline, hard work but discipline. You have to study your body; you have to control your body. When I talk about discipline, I think discipline 100 percent, any part, food what you’re doing,” he said.
This was when his attention was brought towards Munguia‘s recent positive drug test results. Notably, on May 29, Munguia and his team received a notification from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) on Wednesday night regarding exogenous testosterone metabolites in Test A.
In a statement released on social media, Munguia revealed that he had been tested twice during his training camp (against Bruno Surace), and he was rather surprised to see the VADA notification. Moreover, he announced that he was willing to undergo further testing to prove his innocence.
When Pacquiao was asked about his thoughts on Munguia and if PED usage was rampant in the sport of boxing, he chose to refrain from answering it.
“PED, I don’t want to comment about that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Munguia’s team later released a lengthier statement, maintaining his innocence and stating that he was a fighter who had perpetually strived to maintain the integrity of boxing.
“His record speaks for itself. He has always complied with VADA testing protocols and has built a reputation as a clean and respectful fighter who honors the integrity of the sport. We ask the boxing community to remember that context before rushing to judgment,” they wrote. “Exogenous testosterone – like many banned substances – can enter the body in several ways, not solely through intentional use. At this moment, we do not yet know what caused the result.”
