Manny Pacquiao takes on Mario Barrios on July 19, as we look at how the fight could play out.

Pacquiao returns to professional boxing following his 2021 retirement. He suffered a defeat to Yordenis Ugas, as the 46-year-old left the sport as an eight-weight world champion. Pacman is now searching for his first win since 2019 when he beat Keith Thurman to become the WBA Welterweight Champion, making him the oldest champ at that weight class at 40. Meanwhile, Barrios wants to bounce back from his draw against Abel Ramos. Barrios has said that he wants to eventually move up to 154, but that will depend on whether he achieves his targets at 147.

Breakdown

Pacquiao is known for his speed and volume, which saw him throw over 100 punches per round. However, that was during his peak, as the 46-year-old will struggle to replicate those numbers. Pacman has a unique ability to use his footwork to create angles, allowing him to use his devastating left hand. The right hook is also a weapon, something he developed immensely during his time with Freddie Roach.

However, the pace will catch-up with Pacman. If Barrios can take the fight into the later rounds, there is a danger that Manny fails to hang in there. This is especially true given Manny’s style of moving in and out, using combinations before getting out of range. Pacquiao may leave himself open to counters, something which Barrios can capitalise on.

Barrios has the height and reach advantage at 71 inches compared to Manny’s 67. Barrios also has a solid jab, which he uses to set up his right hand. Barrios’ KO record is also impressive, with 18 KOs from his 29 wins. As Manny closes the gap, it will give Barrios plenty of chances to land. While that may be the case, Barrios can be hit, given his less-than-dynamic footwork. The Ramos fight showed that, as he had to get up from the canvas to get the draw. However, if Barrios can keep the fight long and tie up Manny when he can, he may be able to get a decision win.
