LAS VEGAS– After 12 hard-fought rounds by Mario Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs), the fight ended up in a majority draw. The three judges saw this one as 115-113 for Barrios and 114-114 twice, as the main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV, did not produce a winner.

In the opening round, Barrios came out hesitant while Pacquiao touched him consistently with the right jab, and at times would follow it with the straight left down the middle. Pacquiao was testing Barrios early with foot feints. Whatever hesitation Barrios had, it went away in the second round as he led his combinations with the left jab. Then Barrios was stepping to the side and landing his long right hand while Pacquiao had his hands down. Pacquiao was having footwork issues, but that was expected after a long layoff.

In the third round, Barrios settled in and kept Pacquiao at a distance with his 1-2 combination down the middle. Pacquiao was getting frustrated and complained about a low blow that wasn’t. Then, towards the end of the round, he darted towards Barrios and scored a four-punch combination. Barrios controlled most of the fourth round as Pacquiao would come inside quickly and would be met by a Barrios right hand. Pacquiao would have to reset every time he was caught with a good counterpunch.

The fifth round was more of Barrios controlling the tempo and Pacquiao scoring in spurts. Pacquiao just couldn’t find his rhythm. Pacquiao was landing his punches throughout the sixth round, but they didn’t have much steam to them. Barrios was still being cautious but effective from the outside.

The seventh round was more Barrios, but in the eighth, glimpses of vintage Pacquiao showed up, where he threw five to six punch combinations. Barrios buckled a bit as he was in defensive mode throughout the round. Pacquiao continued his offensive bursts throughout the ninth round as Barrios was trying to figure out how to counter him. Barrios landed some good short shots on the inside, but Pacquiao was in control throughout the round.

Barrios went back to what was working for him in the tenth round beyond the left jab, but Pacquiao, with his spurts, was controlling the momentum of the round. At the start of the 11th round, Barrios had moments where it appeared he had Pacquiao buzzed but had no follow-up. He allowed Pacquiao to get back into the fight during the round, which had the crowd in a frenzy.

Both men had their moments in the final round as the crowd was on their feet until the final bell.
