Jake Paul’s ranking climb and his world title ambitions are sparking the kind of debate that boxing thrives on. Paul keeps getting closer and closer to contending for a title. His win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was easily the most credible victory of his career to date, and it gave the WBA enough justification to slot him in at No. 14. Still, many critics argue that 13 fights, even with a name like Chavez Jr. on the résumé, shouldn’t catapult someone into title contention, especially in a division as historically deep as cruiserweight.

That said, Paul’s star power is undeniable. He’s drawing more viewers and generating more attention than nearly anyone else in the division. And unlike many prospects with his level of fame, he is fighting credible opponents early even if some are past their prime or coming off layoffs.
Mauricio Sulaiman’s comments to Boxing Scene signal that the WBC is open to a Paul title shot but only if he proves himself further against a currently ranked contender. It’s a reasonable bar, and a smart way for the WBC to maintain legitimacy while still leaving the door open for a lucrative, high-profile fight with Badou Jack or another titleholder.
If Paul’s team truly wants that WBC shot, expect them to chase a fight soon with someone like Ilunga Makabu, Thabiso Mchunu, or even a lower ranked but still dangerous gatekeeper names who aren’t unbeatable but have legitimate cruiserweight credentials.
Bottom line: if Jake Paul wants to move from YouTube celebrity to real-world champion, the next fight needs to be against someone the boxing world can’t ignore.
