Floyd Mayweather's planned return to professional boxing against Manny Pacquiao has been postponed from September after promotional chaos left two companies believing they had secured the same fight. Bad Left Hook reports the rematch is now on hold while multiple lawsuits play out in public.
Jas Marthur, CEO of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, told Ring Magazine the conflict stems from a Byzantine web of contracts involving Mayweather's exhibition against Mike Tyson, his return to sanctioned boxing, and the Pacquiao rematch. "The same fight was double sold," Marthur said, explaining that EverWonder had already signed Mayweather for October while CSI believed it had purchased his comeback bout for November — both camps listing Pacquiao as the opponent.
According to the report, advances for all three events went through a loan-out company called Frist Apex Ventures rather than directly to Mayweather's accounts. CSI initially bought an exhibition between Mayweather and Tyson, but Mayweather's business manager negotiated a separate deal with CSI for his return to professional boxing and presented it as the Pacquiao fight. Meanwhile, EverWonder had already sent money and entered into its own agreement with Mayweather for an October date.
Marthur said Pacquiao's side has remained organized throughout, noting he anticipated trouble given the multiple entities involved on Mayweather's end. "I knew from the other side, because Floyd was already dealing with a lot of problems, I knew that we were going to run into problems," he said.
The CEO confirmed he still expects the rematch to happen eventually but added they need to let the current legal mess resolve itself before rebuilding the promotion. No new date has been announced.
