Joseph Parker is eager to get an opportunity to become a two-time heavyweight champion, targeting Oleksandr Usyk.
As Usyk was able to knock out Daniel Dubois in Wembley on Saturday night, he is now the only reigning heavyweight champion as he unified the division.
Many fans feel it should have been Parker in the ring with Usyk on Saturday night as opposed to Dubois, however, the Englishman was unable to make amends in his rematch.
Parker is still hopeful of a fight with Usyk before he retires, even having a conversation with the champion after the win.
In footage posted to Parker’s YouTube channel, the video shows the New Zealander’s day before, during, and after Usyk vs Dubois.
Following the conclusion of the main event, Parker is seen at ringside eager to campaign for a fight with Usyk. However, being respectful of the champion, the 36-3 fighter refrained from entering the ring.
When asked in the immediate aftermath of the headline fight could he face Usyk, Parker said, “Derek [Chisora] is in there trying to get a fight, I’m not sure what he’s doing. He needs to —- off. I’m next.”
Footage then cuts to Parker in another interview where he says, “I want to get in the ring now, but I don’t want to take away his shine, I don’t want to be disrespectful. Let him enjoy it.”
Parker would eventually get in the ring. After Usyk had finished his post-fight interview and the crowd began to disperse, the New Zealander got the attention of the Ukrainian.
Congratulating Usyk, Parker followed his ‘well done’ with “You looked good man. Very good. Listen, me next?”
The reply from Usyk was an inconclusive one. The fighter replied, “Bro, I don’t know. At this time, I want to rest.”
Despite his desires for making the fight, Parker was accepting of Usyk’s comments, telling him to rest and see his family.
Although Parker is the clear next opponent for Usyk according to many boxing fans, it is not impossible that the interim champion is leapfrogged.
In his post-fight interview, all of Derek Chisora, Tyson Fury, and Anthony Joshua were mentioned by the Ukrainian.
Agit Kabayel is another top contender and interim title holder in the division. Both Kabayel and Parker shot down the idea of a title eliminator bout as they both aim for a world title fight.
Fabio Wardley holds the interim WBA World Heavyweight title, and is likely close to an opportunity for a full belt.
The winner of Dillian Whyte vs Moses Itauma will also be considered a top contender in the division when their bout concludes on August 16th. However, Usyk’s next opponent may not be announced for some time given the fighter’s desire to rest.
