Michael Buffer has announced many great fights during his career. He has welcomed some of the best fighters into the ring, including Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Floyd Mayweather, among many others. When speaking to talkSPORT, Buffer was asked to recall the greatest fight he’s been involved with.
Michael Buffer began announcing fights in 1982 and quickly established himself as the premier ring announcer. By 1983, he was announcing all Top Rank cards, with his catchphrase “Let’s get ready to rumble!” quickly becoming synonymous with boxing events.
When asked to reveal the best fight he’s ever been involved with:
“A great fight, 1989, February, a blizzard, Atlantic City, Iran Barkley vs Roberto Duran.
“A great fight, I mean, oh my god, just a split decision. Duran once again is a world champion,” said Buffer.
Another memorable fight Buffer was involved in was the IBF heavyweight world title fight between Michael Moorer and George Foreman. It was a largely forgettable bout, with Moorer in control, until a dramatic 10th round that saw “Big George” land the dramatic KO blow, which Buffer recalled:
“Another fight that was a fight, but a great moment. George Foreman and Michael Moorer. And Big George, god rest his soul, lost every minute of every round and goes into the 10th round and throws that one, two, and a one, two and knocks Michael Moorer out.
“That moment, 45-year-old George Foreman. You know how, when you have a knockout, the crowd explodes? In this case, they all went (gasps) and then exploded. And it was that unbelievable feeling, and it was amazing. I could barely…I was so choked up, I could barely get the announcement out,” added Buffer.
