Moses Itauma’s true level will be shown as he takes on experienced veteran Dillian Whyte on August 16th.
Moses Itauma has a lot of pressure on him as fans, boxers, and experts are all waiting with bated breath to see if he is as good as he’s been made out to be.
In his way is Dillian Whyte, the experienced ‘Bodysnatcher’ who has shared the ring with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, and beaten Joseph Parker, Derek Chisora, and Alexander Povetkin.
A win over Whyte, despite his recent form, will put Itauma in the big leagues, with a big name fight likely next if the 20-year-old prospect can weather the storm.
Just as his fight with Whyte inches closer, another rising prospect has declared that he wants to face not just Itauma, but two other hard-hitting heavyweights.
Richard Torrez Jr. is now 13-0 after his latest and best win over Guido Vianello, who beat Arslanbek Makhmudov, Dave Allen’s next opponent.
Torrez is 26 years old, and won the silver medal at the 2020 Olympics after losing in the finals to amateur sensation, Bakhodir Jalolov.
In an interview with Sean Zittel, Torrez spoke on his next moves, and named three fighters he’d like to face next.
Speaking on the Itauma fight, Torrez Jr. said, “I think he’s a great fighter. I do. I think it would be a crazy fight too to kind of like pond-hop a little bit to be able to have a big fight like a USA versus some of those guys, and so I’m hoping, you know, my fingers are crossed for that.”
When asked if there were any other names Torrez has his eyes on, he named two big punchers,
” I mean, there’s like Wardley, there’s Itauma, any of the guys in the top 10, honestly. […] Kabayel, that would be a great fight, that would be cool because we’re both pressure fighters. That’d be an action-packed fight, too.”
Fabio Wardley is coming off a big win over Justis Huni after landing a huge punch to turn the tide of an otherwise terrible night for him.
Agit Kabayel‘s last outing saw Kabayel become the first man to stop Zhilei Zhang after landing a crippling bodyshot on him.
It remains to be seen whether Torrez will land any of these big matches, though him being with Top Rank may make some cross-promotional fights more of a challenge to be made, unless they land on a Saudi card.
As an amateur, Torrez won a host of accolades. He claimed gold at three Youth National Championships in a row, before picking up two consecutive US National Championship wins.
He then won bronze at the Pan American Games, before heading to the Olympics in 2020.
Torrez also won the 2017 Golden Gloves tournament, and it was at this event that he encountered ‘Big Baby’ Jared Anderson.
Torrez fought Anderson in the quarter-finals, winning by unanimous decision.
As a pro, Torrez has also beaten a recognizable name in Tyrrell Herndon, Deontay Wilder‘s comeback opponent.
