The greatest amateur boxer has called it quits today. As an amateur, Vasiliy Lomachenko’s record is 396-1, while winning gold medals at both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games representing Ukraine. He decided to turn pro and signed with Top Rank Promotions, making his pro debut on October 12, 2013, defeating Jose Ramirez by fourth-round knockout.
Vasiliy Lomachenko has now officially announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 37.

For years boxing experts thought that Lomachenko would make his pro debut after his gold medal run at the Beijing Olympics. But he decided to stay in the amateur ranks for four more years. Lomachenko was viewed as a pro fighting amateurs as he was absolutely dominant.
Lomachenko took to his social media to address his fans with a heartfelt message.
“I’m grateful for every victory and every defeat, both in the ring and in life, “I’m thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I’ve gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory, not just in the ring.”

Lamachenko made the phrase Nomochenko popular by dominating his opponents to the point where he made them quit. The combination of arguably the best footwork in boxing and precise punching made one a match up nightmare.
Lomachenko would go on to win his first world championship defeating Gary Russell Jr for the WBO featherweight belt. He would go on to win titles in the lightweight division as well. There was talks with him facing Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis for a showdown at 140 but Lamachenko declined the fight. His heart wasn’t really in the right place with his country at war during the time. Some boxing fans say that he ducked Tank but we will never know at this point. He would finish his career with a record of 18-3, 12 KOs.
