The Oleksandr Usyk next fight news has arrived and the undisputed heavyweight king will make his return to the ring this Saturday for his much anticipated rematch with Tyson Fury.
Immediately after concluding their first fight, Fury stated that he intended to exercise his rematch clause and seek redemption against Usyk. In May, Turki Alalashikh announced via X that the fight was confirmed for December in Saudia Arabia.
In one of boxing’s most entertaining heavyweight fights in recent memory, Oleksandr Usyk handed Tyson Fury his first loss to add the WBC belt and join the WBA, IBF, IBO, WBO, and The Ring straps he already owned. He is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.
What Happened: From the gate, Usyk began closing the distance and landing straight punches to the body. However, Fury was able to take control of the fight after managing his distance with jabs and using his uppercut to hold back Usyk’s offense.
The Ukranian rallied after the midpoint to retake the momentum, nearly finishing Fury in the seventh round. The knockdown played a huge role in his eventual split-decision victory.
The Fallout: With the threat of the IBF stripping Usyk of their belt, he decided to vacate the crown which led to a promotion for interim champ Daniel Dubois. Unfortunately, the rematch with Fury will not be for the undisputed title as a result. However, with Anthony Joshua set to challenge Dubois in September, the stage is setting for a future undisputed championship bout.
The Bottom Line: Both Usyk and Fury have plenty to work with as they strategize for the rematch. If Usyk succeeds again, beyond cementing him as top pound for pound fighter, it could also propel his name among some of the all-time great champions in the sport. A loss would most likely turn the rivalry into a trilogy with similar stakes.
Usyk has succeeded at heavyweight despite typically being the smaller man in the ring. Using superior speed, footwork, and the ability to overcome adversity, he has been able to reign among taller and heavier men.
The measure of a fighter is often down to the money they’ve made throughout their career. Oleksandr Usyk’s net worth is estimated to be as much $50 million.
