Ukrainian star Oleksandr Usyk has been warned he may be the latest in the long list of stars to overlook emerging heavyweight hitman Fabio Wardley.
Turning back the clock with a patented late finish, newly-minted interim WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley recorded a spectacular win over the weekend.
Stopping the late career charge of Kiwi favorite Joseph Parker, Wardley put himself in line to share the ring with Usyk next with a brutal penultimate round knockout win.
And staking his claim for a clash with the undisputed champion, Wardley has one particular skillset which could pose a “problem” for Oleksandr Usyk, according to a veteran promoter.
Keen to book Wardley in a pairing with Usyk for the undisputed champion, Queensberry Promotions leader Frank Warren would snap his duck against the Ukrainian if Wardley springs another upset.
Booking his long-time client Tyson Fury, in two separate super fights with Usyk last year, Warren was unable to guide the WBC champion to success, who suffered back-to-back decision losses.
However, against Wardley, Usyk has been warned that the Ipswich star has one particular skill which may prove problematic for the undefeated icon.
“If he (Fabio Wardley) catches someone, he gives them a problem,” Warren told Box Nation. “He’s boxing a little bit better now — not a little bit, he’s boxing better. As I say, he’s throwing some good body shots. You know, Oleksandr (Usyk) is a great fighter; he’s the fighter of his generation.
“He’s got the four belts, he’s done everything that’s been asked of him,” Warren explained. “This would be a great fight [with Wardley]. He said before the fight, he was going to fight the winner. I hope he sticks to that. It’s a big fight in the UK, a massive fight over here.”
Seemingly uninterested in a showdown with Fury in a trilogy bout with the Morecambe native, Usyk’s immediate future in the ring became all the clearer with Wardley’s win over Parker.
And as far as Warren is concerned, too, a timeline for the prospective super fight for all the belts is rather straightforward.
Sidelined through a niggling back injury in recent months, Usyk is targeted to fight Wardley in a return to action as soon as March of next year.
